Franz Xaver Baldia was born on February 6, 1898 in Landstrasse (Vienna) , Vienna's 3rd district. Even as a boy he was collecting beetles and insects in the vicinity of the then still undeveloped arsenal in Vienna's 3rd district. Later he was particularly interested in the genera Carabus ( real ground beetles or large ground beetles ), Cychrus ( shovel beetles ) , Calosoma ( doll robbers ) and Lucanidae ( Schröter (beetles) ). With his friends and the entomologists Franz Johann Legorsky and Karl Martin Baderlehe went on excursions at home and abroad. He mainly did field entomology. Over decades he built up a diverse, meticulously labeled special collection and documented numerous sites. Franz Baldia was from 1958 to 1969 on the board of the "Working Group of Austrian Entomologists".

After completing his commercial training, he worked for the Austrian Federal Railways ( ÖBB ) until his retirement . His wife Rosa often accompanied him on excursions. Franz Baldia died on November 18, 1981 in Lilienfeld in Lower Austria. His grave is in the cemetery of St. Aegyd am Neuwalde , the birthplace of his father. Franz Baldia is related to the local councilor Ferdinand Mathias Baldia (1818–1869) in Ottakring and his son, the city architect Ferdinand Baldia (architect) (1860–1936).
