Franz Caspar Schnitger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Caspar Schnitger (born October 15, 1693 , † 1729 probably in Zwolle or Groningen ) was an organ builder .

Life

Franz Caspar Schnitger was one of the sons of the famous Arp Schnitger . After his death in 1719, he and his brother Johann Jürgen (Georg) (1690–1734 or later) moved the workshop to the Netherlands and initially settled in Zwolle . There they completed the large new building (1719–1721) planned by Arp Schnitger for the organ of the Sint-Michaëlskerk in Zwolle.

Franz Caspar is occasionally confused with his son of the same name. Albertus Antonius Hinsz took over after the early death of Franz Caspar sr. his workshop and continued the Schnitger tradition. Hinsz married the widow of Franz Caspar sr. and so became the stepfather of Frans Casper Snitger (jr.), who ran the workshop together with Heinrich Hermann Freytag after the death of Hinsz . His son Herman Eberhard Freytag (1796–1869) in turn was the last representative of the Schnitger School in the Netherlands, who maintained the tradition until after the middle of the 19th century, while in Germany it was largely after the death of Arp Schnitger and his immediate generation of pupils broke off.
