Franz Eugen Klein

Franz Eugen Klein (born April 29, 1912 in Vienna , † October 20, 1944 in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp ) was an Austrian conductor at the Vienna State Opera , composer , pianist and known for his lightning parodies . He was of Jewish faith .

Life

From November 1931 to 1938, Franz Eugen Klein was together with Fritz Spielmann (1906–1997) conductor in the cabaret of love Augustin . During this period, Klein conducted at the Theater in der Josefstadt , Alt-Wiener Volkstheater , Wiener Kammerspiele and at the Volksoper Vienna . He took part in Karl Farkas' cabaret .

Klein fled into exile in France and was interned there in the Meslay-du-Maine camp. On October 9, 1942, he and his wife Susanne were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto , where he and Gideon Klein and Viktor Ullmann and others organized the musical life for the inmates.

In addition to the groups that Rafael Schächter put together again and again, Klein founded another ensemble consisting of Bohemian, German and Austrian singers. Carmen , The Kiss , Tosca and Figaro's Wedding were performed under Klein's direction . The world premiere of his opera Der gläserne Berg is suspected, but has not yet been proven.

On October 16, 1944, Klein was deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp and murdered there immediately upon arrival.
