Franz Herbich (geologist)

Franz Herbich (born January 15, 1821 in Preßburg , † January 15, 1887 in Klausenburg ) was an Austrian geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Franz Herbich was the son of the military doctor and botanist Franz Herbich (1791–1865). In 1840/41 he studied medicine at the University of Vienna for service in the army, but then studied mining in the Schemnitz area . From 1845 to 1854 he worked in the mines of Bukovina and from 1854 in Transylvania . He was in the ironworks of Keresztbánya and Füle until 1859 and finally director of the copper mine in Balánbánya . From 1859 he was curator-adjunct at the museum in Cluj-Napocato whom he donated his mineralogical collection. From 1870 he was also an assistant geologist in the geological survey of eastern Transylvania. In 1875 he received his doctorate in Klausenburg and was a private lecturer there until 1879. From 1879 to 1881 he was a mountain ridge and consultant for mining in Bosnia - Herzegovina . In 1882/83 he mapped the area between the passes of Törzburg and Ojtoz as a geologist .
