Bran ( German  Törzburg , Hungarian Törcsvár ) is a municipality in Transylvania , Romania , and is located in the Brașov district .

The municipality of Bran is located in the southeast of the Transylvanian Basin , east of the Piatra Craiului Mountains (Königsstein) and west of the Bucegi Mountains (Butschetsch Mountains) . Bran is located at the mouth of the Șimon brook in the Turcu and on Drum național 73 - a section of the European route 574 - about 12 kilometers from the small town of Râşnov (Rosenau) and 30 kilometers southwest of the district capital Braşov (Kronstadt) . The place became famous for its castle, which is located above the village. From here the Bran Pass leads from southeastern Transylvania to the historical region of Great Wallachia .

history

Bran was first mentioned in a document in 1377. In a cave called by the locals near Valea Coacăzei , according to Alfred Prox , archaeological finds that point to the Early Bronze Age were made.

In the Kingdom of Hungary , today's community belonged to the chair district Törcsvár in the County of Fagaras , then the historic district of Brasov and from 1950 to today's district Braşov.

Since 1850, the highest number of inhabitants in the area of ​​today's municipality was determined in 1977. 1977 also marks the highest absolute number of ethnic Romanians to date. The highest population of the Magyars (98) was registered in 1910, that of the Romanian Germans (69) in 1880 and that of the Roma (76) in 1850.

Attractions

  • The Bran Castle is located high on a steep cliff above the canyon and the road that Transylvania with Wallachia links. The building, the construction of which was decided in 1377, was expanded into a tourist attraction under Ceausescu. The castle is similar to the castle of the vampire lord described in Bram Stoker's Dracula . The historical model of Dracula, the Wallachian prince Vlad III. Drăculea , however, probably never set foot there. The property is a listed building.
  • The Muzeul National Bran village museum was built in the 16th century, renovated in the 19th century and belonged to the Austro-Hungarian customs administration until 1918. The present museum was opened in 1957 under the name Secția Etnografică Bran . Due to increased expenses and the return of the property to the owners, the museum should be closed in 2017, its operation has been extended until May 25, 2018. The property is a listed building.
