Augustin (outdated Agostin ; German Agestendorf , Hungarian Ágostonfalva ) is a municipality in the Brașov County , in Transylvania , Romania .
The place is also known under the German name Augustinsdorf and the Latin Villa Sancti Augustini .
Geographical location
Augustin is located southeast of the Transylvanian Basin on the left bank of the Olt ( Alt ), west of the Baraolter Mountains ( Munții Baraolt ). In the northeast of the Brașov district on the Teiuş – Brașov railway line and at the intersection of the DJ 131B and 131C district roads, about 19 kilometers north of the European route 60 near Măieruș ( Nussbach ), Augustin is about 50 kilometers north of the district capital Brașov ( Kronstadt ) away.
The small town of Baraolt in Covasna County is about five kilometers northeast.
history
Augustine was first mentioned in 1679. According to M. Roska , archaeological finds that point to the Neolithic period were made on the site . Several finds from the Late Bronze Age found in the area of Augustin and delivered to the museum in Sfântu Gheorghe were lost in 1944. In the Kingdom of Hungary Augustin was in the Kőhalom (today Rupea ) district in Greater Kokelburg County .
Originally Augustin belonged to the Ormeniș municipality , but was spun off in 2005.
Augustin has a kindergarten and a primary school with around 260 students and 22 teachers.
population
Since the official survey of 1850, the highest number of inhabitants (1860) and also that of the Roma (915) in 2011 were registered in the area of the village of Augustin . The highest number of Romanians (903) and that of Magyars (114) was recorded in 1966 and that of Romanian Germans (8) was recorded in 1930. In 1977 one of them claimed to be Ukrainian .
Attractions
The Romanian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built in 1777 and is in need of repair.
