Jibert ( German Seiburg , Hungarian Zsiberk ) is a municipality in the Brașov district in Transylvania , Romania .
The place is also known by the outdated Romanian names Șibert , Șiberga and Jibergu .
location
Jibert is 14 km west of Rupea ( Reps ) on the connecting road to Făgăraş ( Fogarasch ).
history
The place is a settlement founded in the 12th century by German emigrants, the Transylvanian Saxons , which was first mentioned in 1289 as Villa Syberg. From 1250 the construction of a Romanesque church is assumed. A Saxon school has been established from 1348 onwards. In 1450, the church's bell tower was converted into a defense tower. In 1604 the church had to be rebuilt after a fire. As early as 1676, the entire place with the church was again victim of a conflagration and had to be rebuilt again. In 1868 the foundation stone was laid for the construction of a new church, which was completed by 1883.
In 1786 there were 1274 people living in the village. In 1966 there were still 1087. Of the Transylvanian Saxons, 145 people lived in Seiburg in 1992; since then this number has continued to decline sharply. In an overview of the Protestant church members, 57 members are counted for Seiburg in 2009.
All places in the municipality of Jibert are strongly influenced by agriculture and the residents earn their main livelihood with it.
