Viştea [ ˈwiʃtea ] with the municipality seat in Viştea de Jos ( Unter-Wittendorf ), is a municipality in the Brașov district , in Transylvania , Romania .

The municipality seat is also known under the German name Unter-Wischt .

Geographical location

Location of Viștea in the Brașov district

The municipality of Viştea is located south of the Transylvanian Basin in the northern foothills of the Fagaras Mountains ( Munții Făgăraş ), on both sides of the Olt ( Alt ) river. In the west of the Brașov district at the mouth of the Viştea brook in the Olt, on the Avrig – Făgăraş railway line and on European route 68 , the municipality is located 21 kilometers west of the city of Făgăraş ( Fogarasch ). The district capital Brașov ( Kronstadt ) is located about 90 kilometers southeast of Viștea de Jos.

On the territory of the municipality there is a hydropower plant on the Viștea reservoir between the incorporated villages of Olteț ( Bessenbach ) and Rucăr ( Ruckersdorf ). The incorporated village of Viștișoara is also the starting point for the 2544  m high Moldoveanu , the highest mountain in Romania.

history

The place Viştea de Jos was first mentioned in 1390 or early 1400 in a donation from the Wallachian voivod Mircea cel Bătrân to the boyars Costea , or in 1511 (according to different information) .

In the Kingdom of Hungary , today's municipality Viştea was in the Alsóárpás chair district in Fagaras County .

The village of Drăguș ( dragon village ) also belonged to the municipality of Viştea , which became an independent municipality in 2004.

population

In the official survey of 1850, 4910 inhabitants were registered in the area of ​​today's municipality. 4,725 of them were Romanians , 141 were Roma , 22 were Romanian Germans , 12 were Magyars and eight of them were Jews. The highest population of the municipality (5078) and at the same time that of the Magyars (39) and that of the Romanian Germans (19) was determined in 1956. The highest population of Romanians (4932) was registered in 1930 and that of Roma (301) was registered in 1992. Furthermore, in 1956, one resident referred to himself as a Slovak . In 2011 there were 2026 people in the municipality of Viştea de Jos. 1694 were Romanians, 223 were Roma, four known themselves as Magyars and the rest did not provide any information about their ethnic group.

  • In Viştea de Jos the Romanian Orthodox Church Sf. Arhangheli Mihail şi Gavril , built around 1487 and renovated in the 20th century, is a listed building.
