The municipality of Beclean is located south of the Transylvanian Basin in the Fogarascher Land ( Țara Făgărașului ) on both sides of the river Olt ( Alt ). At the confluence of the Vâlcioara brook in the Săvăstreni (a left tributary of the Olt), the Avrig – Făgăraş railway line and the 68 European route, Beclean is four kilometers west of the city of Făgăraş ( Fogarasch ); the district capital Brașov ( Kronstadt ) is located about 55 kilometers to the east.

The place Beclean was mentioned in a document in 1509. In 1576 Stephan Báthory , the then King of Poland, relocated the Romanians who lived here and settled Transylvanian Saxons . It was not until the 19th century that Romanians , Magyars and Roma settled again in Beclean . In the Kingdom of Hungary , Badlinen was in the Fogaras district in Fagaras County .

Archaeological finds near Piscul Cremenișului on the area of ​​the incorporated village of Calbor ( Kaltbrunn ) indicate settlement in the Neolithic .

population

Since the official census of 1850, mostly Romanians have been registered in the area of ​​today's municipality. The highest number of inhabitants (3955) - also that of the Romanians (3837) - was determined in 1880. Since then, the population has increased steadily, so that in 2011, 1826 people were registered in the municipality of Beclean. The highest population of the Roma (180) was registered in 2011, that of the Magyars (48) was registered in 1930 and that of the Romanian Germans (22) was registered in 1890. Furthermore, a Slovak was registered in 1890 and a Ukrainian in 1977 .

  • In Beclean the Romanian Orthodox Church Adormirea Maicii Domnului , built in 1804, is a listed building.
  • In Calbor the orthodox churches Sf. Arhangheli , 1732 and the Sf. Nicolae , built in 1802, are a listed building. The former fortified church is used by the Romanian population as a fruit chamber.
