Sâmbăta de Sus old spelling Sîmbăta de Sus [ ˈsɨmbɘta de sus ] (outdated Sâmbăta Răsăriteană ; German Ober-Mühlendorf , Hungarian Felsőszombatfalva ) is a municipality in the Brașov district in Transylvania , Romania .
The place is also known by the German names Obersambata and Ober-Sombath and the Hungarian Keletifelsőszombatfalva and Szombatfalva .
Geographical location
Sâmbăta de Sus is located in the northern foothills of the Fagaras Mountains ( Munții Făgăraș ). In the west of the Brașov district, the agrarian village is located on the district road ( drum județean ) DJ 105B and on the Sâmbăta brook 6 km south of the Olt ( Alt ) river and the 68 European route . The place is located 18 kilometers southwest of the city of Făgăraş ( Fogarasch ); the district capital Brașov ( Kronstadt ) about 85 kilometers to the east.
Sâmbăta de Sus is also the starting point for the Moldoveanu , the highest mountain in Romania.
history
Sâmbăta de Sus was first mentioned in a document in 1437 and for a long time was in direct possession of various boyars . The Brâncoveanu family in particular shaped the history of the village. The Brâncoveanu family manor has also been preserved in the eastern part of the municipality .
Sâmbăta de Sus originally belonged to the Voila municipality , but was spun off in 2003. Together with the climatic health resort Stațiunea Climaterică Sâmbăta , which is located nine kilometers to the south , where the well-known Orthodox monastery Sâmbăta de Sus is also located, both places form today's municipality.
The trade is limited to several small grocery stores. There is a kindergarten and a primary school ( școală generală ) in the village .

Furthermore, one Serb was registered in 1930 and two Ukrainians in 2002 .
The population mostly lives from agriculture and animal husbandry . Numerous residents also commute to the industrial plants of Făgăraș and Victoria . Another important employer is SC Gouda Gold SRL, which operates a cheese-making factory in the municipality. In addition, tourism plays an important role, above all due to the monastery in the southern part of the municipality, around which several hotels and guest houses have been built in recent years.
