Ormeniș [ ormeˈniʃ ] ( German  Irmesch , Hungarian Ürmös ) is a municipality in the Brașov district , in Transylvania , Romania .

Geographical location

Location of Ormeniș in the Brașov district

Ormeniș is located southeast of the Transylvanian Basin on the left bank of the Olt ( Alt ), west of the Baraolter Mountains ( Munții Baraolt ) in the northeast of the Brașov district. On the Teiuş – Braşov railway line and on the district road ( drum județean ) DJ 131B, about 12 kilometers north of the European route 60 near Măieruş ( Nußbach ), Ormeniş is about 45 kilometers north of the district capital Braşov ( Kronstadt ).

The small town of Baraolt in Covasna County is about ten kilometers to the northeast.

history

Ormeniș was first mentioned in a document (according to different information) in 1694 or 1721. According to archaeological finds on the mountain Țepea Ormenișului (ung. Urmöstepej ), settlement in the region suggests early history . On the east side of the mountain is located, according to M. Roska an as yet unexplored hill grave . In the Kingdom of Hungary Augustin was in the Kőhalom (today Rupea ) district in Greater Kokelburg County .

The town of Augustin belonged to Ormeniș and was spun off in 2005.

population

In the 1850 census, 927 people were counted in Ormeniș. 593 of them were Magyars , 276 were Romanians and 58 were Roma . Since the official survey in 1850, the highest number of inhabitants (2041) was registered in the area in 1977. The highest number of Magyars (1208) and Romanians (728) was recorded in 1966, and that of Roma (829) in 2011. Romanian Germans were also registered in almost every survey; the highest number of inhabitants (5) was determined in 1992. Furthermore, in 2002 one of them claimed to be Ukrainian . In 2011 there were 1976 people in Ormeniș. 829 were Roma, 757 were Magyars, 349 were Romanians and 3 claimed to be Germans. The rest did not provide any information about their ethnicity.

The main occupation of the population is agriculture and livestock.

Attractions

The Unitarian Church built around 1787 and the Romanian Orthodox Church Sf. Nicolae erected around 1896.
