Franz Kiechle

Franz Kiechle (born November 27, 1931 in Munich , † March 1991 in Bochum ) was a German ancient historian .

Life

Franz Kiechle studied history, philology, Egyptology and Byzantine studies at the University of Munich and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , where he received his doctorate as a student of Helmut Berve in the winter semester of 1957/1958 . In his dissertation he dealt with the Messenian Wars and the emigration of the Messenians. Then Kiechle was a scholarship holder at the Commission for Ancient History in Munich. In 1962 he completed his habilitation in Erlangen with the thesis Lakonia and Sparta (published in Munich 1963).

In 1964, Kiechle was appointed full professor of ancient history at the newly founded Ruhr University in Bochum . There he worked as director of the Institute for Ancient History until his death.

Franz Kiechle's research focus was ancient social and military history. In addition to the history of Sparta and the Peloponnese, he dealt intensively with Roman history. His monographs Rome's Rise to World Power (Stuttgart 1967; only published volume in its Roman history ) and slave labor and technical progress in the Roman Empire (Wiesbaden 1969) are considered standard works.
