Life

Franz Knappe was born in the Giant Mountains . After being expelled from the Sudetenland, he ended up in the Soviet occupation zone in Geschwenda in the Thuringian Forest , where he devoted himself to winter sports.

In 1950 he became the first GDR champion in special jumping in Schierke with widths of 63 and 63.5 meters. The following year he was runner-up in special jumping at the student world championships in Romania . In 1952 he won the GDR championship again together with Werner Lesser.

From its foundation in 1956 to 1966 he was a trainer in the Army Sports Club (ASK) Oberhof and at the same time built up the children's and youth sports school (KJS) Zella-Mehlis. Ski jumping greats like Helmut Recknagel trained under him .
