Franz Leopold Schmelzer

Franz Leopold Schmelzer (born July 22, 1965 ) is an Austrian film and television director .

Life

From 1980 to 1985 Schmelzer graduated from the HTBLVA Graz-Ortweinschule / specialty film and multimedia art in Graz and began studying at the Vienna Film Academy in 1986 , which he completed in 1996 with a directing diploma from Peter Patzak . He then went on study trips to Israel, Turkey, France, the Balkans and the Iberian Peninsula and gained experience in filming. He expanded his knowledge with field trips to the former USSR, the USA and Great Britain. In 1997 he received a postgraduate scholarship in Austria and attended courses at the University of California (UCLA) Extensions / Entertainment Studies Professional Training in Film & TV and Music , and in 2003 he attended the Documentary Campus Master's School and took part in the History Producers Congress in Paris. He then completed an internship at “Granada-Bristol” in 2004, at that time one of the largest TV production companies in Great Britain.

In addition to a variety of documentaries that he directed, he produced A Broken Time in 1994 and Grenzgänger in 1995 , for which he also wrote the screenplay. Various Schmelzer documentaries have also been released on DVD.

Schmelzer was also a member of the jury for the Film and Video Prize of the State of Styria from 1997 to 2000, and from 1999 to 2007 lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences for Information Professions in Eisenstadt, from 2001 to 2008, member of the board of ADA (Austrian Directors Association), from 2003 to 2007 member of the General Assembly of Diagonale and since 2003 lecturer at Danube University Krems , the Austrian study center for TV & film production.

In 2015 Schmelzer was nominated for the International Emmy Award in the Documentation category for his universe documentary Africa's Wild West .

The ZDF Terra-X documentary Das Bronzekartell (director: Schmelzer, script: Gerhard J. Rekel ) was shown in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

In 2016, the international coproduction Maximiliano (Maximilian von Mexico - The Dream of Ruling) was submitted by the Mexican partner "SPR" to the " Prêmios-TAL 2016" in Uruguay and nominated for the best 4 documentaries of the year.
