Franz Peters (born December 18, 1888 in Giebichenstein , † August 11, 1933 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Franz Peters learned the profession of bricklayer after attending middle school . In 1906 he joined the construction workers' association. In 1907 he became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). From March 1914 until his call-up in February 1915, he worked as an employee of the construction workers' association in Halle. After his return from the First World War in 1918, Peters moved to the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany(USPD), as its secretary for the Halle-Merseburg district association from 1919 to 1922. In 1922 he returned to the SPD. From 1922 to 1933 he was the district secretary of the SPD in the Halle-Merseburg district. From 1927 to 1933 he also held the district chairmanship. From 1922 he was a member of the central party committee of the SPD as a representative of the district association.

In 1920/21 Franz Peters was a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Prussian Province of Saxony and from 1920 to 1933 also a member of the Provincial Council . In December 1924 he was elected to the Reichstag for the first time , to which he belonged until the Social Democratic mandates were canceled after the National Socialist “ seizure of power ” in June 1933. From 1929 to 1933 he was a member of the Halle city ​​council , where he led the SPD parliamentary group.

As one of the most famous Halle Social Democrats, Peters was exposed to particularly strong pressure in the last few years of the Weimar Republic. Because of his commitment to the Weimar democracy, he drew the hatred of the National Socialists. Since the beginning of the 1930s, it had to be temporarily protected by the police. Due to the pressure and the constant high workload, Peters developed a heart condition.

Peters was one of the 94 Social Democratic members of the Reichstag who voted against the Enabling Act on March 23, 1933 . In May 1933, the already seriously ill heart Peters came into custody . Shortly after his release from protective custody , he died on August 11, 1933 as a result of illness and imprisonment. His grave is in the Halle Südfriedhof . Peters was married to the daughter of the SPD politician and member of the Reichstag, Adolf Albrecht , until his death .
