Franz Ritter (philologist)
Franz Ritter (born February 15, 1803 in Medebach , † October 22, 1875 in Bonn ) was a German classical philologist .
Ritter attended the Laurentianum grammar school in Arnsberg . He studied classical philology in Bonn and Berlin . In 1828 he received his doctorate in Bonn with the font De Aristophanis Pluto . In the same year he received his habilitation. Since 1833 Ritter taught in Bonn as an associate professor. He held this position until his death.
He published numerous editions by Terenz , Aristotle , Firmicus Maternus , Sophocles and other authors. In addition, in 1856/57 Ritter published a complete edition of the works of Horace and several complete editions of Tacitus . The first appeared between 1834 and 1836, the second in 1848 and the third between 1864 and 1867. His son is the historian Moriz Ritter .
