Franz Sausen

Franz Karl Sausen (born January 23, 1810 in Mainz ; † May 31, 1866 there ) was a German theologian .

Life

Sausen was born the son of a tailor and studied Catholic theology in Mainz and Giessen after attending high school in Mainz . During his studies in 1830 he became a member of the old fraternity Germania Gießen . Through this he was involved in "fraternity activities", which led to an investigation and an entry in the black book of the Frankfurt federal central authority. He was acquitted on December 9, 1836 by the Giessen court. He entered the Mainz seminary , but soon had to quit again due to a persistent ear condition and give up his plan to become a clergyman .

Around 1837 he was a teacher at the Swiss grammar school in Disentis for some time , but from 1839 went back entirely to Mainz, where he became editor of the Mainz Journal and worked as a private scholar . He wrote and published numerous works on church history . In 1857 he founded the Katholische Volksblatt .

In 1863 he received from Pope Pius IX for his involvement in Catholic journalism . the Order of Gregorius ( knight ).
