Franz Unferdinger

Franz Xaver Unferdinger (born April 3, 1833 in Vienna , † April 30, 1890 in Brno ) was an Austrian mathematician and astronomer.

Unferdinger studied mathematics, mechanics and physics at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna from 1846, graduating in 1850. In addition, he studied astronomy and mathematics with Josef Petzval at the University of Vienna . From 1851 to 1857 he worked as an actuary in Trieste (Azienda Assicuratrice) and was from 1857 teacher of mathematics and nautical astronomy at the Naval Academy in Trieste . From 1859 he was at the marine observatories in Trieste ( Astronomical Observatory Trieste ) and Venice and also taught on the screw frigates SMS Adria and SMS Donau and the brig SMS Pylades. In 1861 he returned to Vienna, where he was a private teacher and unpaid assistant to Simon Stampfer at the Polytechnic Institute. From 1862 he was initially a substitute teacher for mathematics at the Oberrealschule in Vienna 1, where he became a professor, which he remained until 1872/73. He was also a professor at the secondary school in Vienna-Alsergrund (later Josefstadt). In 1867 he completed his habilitation at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna, where he became a private lecturer and in 1873 an associate professor. In 1873 he became professor and holder of the then newly founded second chair for mathematics at the TH Brno . In 1878 he became a member of the State Examination Commission for Mathematics.

He dealt with geometry, trigonometry, geodesy, integral equations, actuarial mathematics and number theory. On October 6, 1888 , he became a member of the Leopoldina .

In 1879 he married Julie Baumann.
