Franz Wohlgemuth

Franz Wohlgemuth (born October 22, 1915 in Cologne , † 1972 ) was a German university professor and politician ( SED ). From 1950 to 1951 he was a member of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliament in the GDR .

Life

Wohlgemuth, son of a locksmith, studied Catholic theology after graduating from high school. During the Second World War he did military service in the Wehrmacht from 1943 . As a first lieutenant he became a Soviet prisoner of war. He attended an anti-fascist school and became a front-line representative of the NKFD .

In May 1945, Willi Bredel returned to Germany as a member of an initiative group in the Soviet occupation zone and became a member of the KPD and the Kulturbund (KB). He was a member of the KPD district leadership in Greifswald and became a member of the SED in 1946. In the same year he became a curator at the University of Greifswald and in 1949 at the University of Rostock .

From February to June 1950 he took over the chairmanship of the Mecklenburg State Management of the Kulturbund. In September 1950 he became head of the main department for higher education, science and the arts in the Ministry of Public Education of the State of Mecklenburg. In October 1950 he was elected to the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . He gave up his mandate in 1951 because he took on the role of head of department in the State Secretariat for Higher Education in the GDR. In 1954 he was awarded a PhD. PhD and in 1958 he received his habilitation . In June 1957 he was released from the position of Deputy State Secretary for Higher Education “because of deficiencies in his work” and in September 1957 he was transferred to the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg as Professor of the History of Socialism . In April 1958 he fled to West Berlin .
