Franz Wolff-Metternich

Franz Florentin Maria Graf Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht (born December 31, 1893 in Feldhausen ; † May 25, 1978 in Cologne ) was a German art historian and from 1928 to 1950 state curator for the Rhine province and 1945/1946 for the province of North Rhine and subsequently for the administrative districts of Aachen , Düsseldorf and Cologne .

Life

Wolff-Metternich comes from the Wolff-Metternich family . On Herdringen he married on November 5, 1925 in church Alix Reichsfreiin von Furstenberg (1900-1991), a daughter of Engelbert Egon von Furstenberg cooker rings . He studied art history at the University in Bonn , where he at Paul Clemen received his doctorate. He then worked in the preservation of monuments in the Rhine Province and was provincial curator from 1928 to 1950 . From 1940 to 1942 he was in charge of art protection for the Wehrmacht in France . From 1950 to 1952 he worked for the Foreign Office , from 1953 until his retirement in 1962 he was director of the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome .
