Franz Xaver von Predl (* 1795 in Teisbach near Dingolfing , † February 10, 1866 in Donauwörth ) was a Bavarian officer ; he wrote an adventure book about the Bavarian expedition to Greece in 1832/35.

biography

He was born at Theisbach Castle, the son of the Bavarian governor and judge Ignatz von Predl (1759–1806) and his wife Veronika von Kärner. The father and his ancestors came from Plattling ; In addition to his job, he also worked as a draftsman and engraver.

In 1809/10 Predl visited the cadet corps and joined the Bavarian Army . In the battle of Hanau in 1813 he suffered a serious wound that restricted his active ability to serve as he got older. In the 12th Infantry Regiment "King Otto of Greece" Predl took part in the Greece expedition from 1832 to 1835, about which he published a memory book. As a major , he was transferred to the position of field staff officer of the Germersheim garrison by order of the army on October 9, 1849 . Predl thus became the second most important officer after the fortress commander . He remained in this position until 1859, when he was appointed director of the Army Veterans Institute and the commandant of Donauwörth by an army order on April 28th . This was a separate military service station in which all Bavarian soldiers who were no longer fit for normal service due to illness were admitted and looked after, provided they were married but could not make a living in any other way.

Predl died as a colonel in Donauwörth on February 10, 1866, after receiving the Catholic deaths. He was married to Betzi von Dehler, the marriage remained childless.

His older sister Katharina von Predl (1790–1871), a painter and personal acquaintance of King Ludwig I , lived mainly in Italy and is buried in the Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome . She also portrayed Franz Xaver von Predl. As a childless married couple, he and his wife wanted to have the sister's daughter in Germersheim. Her name was Mathilde Grassis, but she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Sacré-Cœur) in the monastery of Santa Trinità dei Monti in Rome as a religious sister .

Predl was a first class knight of the Order of Merit of St. Michael , a first class knight of the Grand Ducal Hessian Order of Ludwig and a knight of the Greek Order of Savior . He also wore the military monument 1813/1815 , the Greek Cross of the Bavarian Aid Corps and the Cross of the Order of Ludwig .

In his story, Die Jachenauer in Greece , which is about the Bavarian expedition to Greece , the local writer Maximilian Schmidt named the memory book Predls 1888 as one of his historical sources.
