Franz von Fleischer

Franz von Fleischer (born November 27, 1801 in Lausigk , † August 24, 1878 in Hohenheim ) was a Saxon , German botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ F. meat. "

Life

Fleischer devoted himself to pharmacy , made a botanical trip to the Alps of Tyrol and the neighboring northern Italy in 1825 and published the rare plants collected on this trip. He had collected over 400 species of higher plants and 200 species of mosses and lichens, more than 15,000 specimens in total.

The success of this trip led to the foundation of the Natural History Travel Association in Esslingen am Neckar , for which Fleischer went to the Levant in 1826 and 1827 . From 1828 to 1832 he studied medicine and natural sciences at the University of Tübingen , was then doctor and teacher at the Fellenberg Institute in Hofwil until 1834 , until 1840 professor of natural sciences at the Aarau Cantonal School , then at the Hohenheim Agricultural Academy , where he has only worked since 1874 Botany taught. A collection of Riesd grasses ( Carex ) belonging to his dissertation in 1832 on sedge grasses in Württemberg can be found in the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart.

Fleischer's willowherb ( Epilobium fleischeri )

Honors

Among other things, Fleischer's willowherb ( Epilobium fleischeri Hochst.), Which he discovered on the Ortler , was named after Fleischer . The species was first described by Christian Ferdinand Hochstetter in 1826.
