Steffen was born in Indonesia, was adopted by a Swiss couple and grew up in Saanen in the Bernese Oberland . At the beginning of her sports career, she was an alpine ski racer . She competed in FIS races from December 1996, and was then used in the European Cup from February 1997. Over time, she specialized in the downhill and super-G disciplines . Her best result at the European Cup level was a 10th place in March 2003, plus a victory in an FIS race a year earlier.
In April 2003, Steffen took part in an alpine race for the last time, because she had decided to focus on the new discipline of ski cross. Her debut in the Freestyle World Cup was on January 18, 2003 in Laax , where she was disqualified. In the following season she immediately established herself at the top of the world: On November 23, 2003, she finished second in Saas-Fee , with which she won her first World Cup points and at the same time achieved her first podium finish. She celebrated the only World Cup victory of her career to date on January 10, 2004 in Pozza di Fassa . With a total of four podium places, she took second place in the World Cup discipline ranking.
The 2004/05 season was almost as successful. Steffen was on the podium three times and came third in the discipline ranking. In addition, there was the Swiss championship title. Due to injury, she had to pause almost the entire 2005/06 season, but was able to defend her championship title. In January 2007 she was fourth in the World Cup race in Flaine , but a cruciate ligament rupture again meant the premature end of the season. In 2008 she suffered another cruciate ligament tear. In the winter of 2008/09, Steffen was able to place himself in the top ten four times, and once in the winter of 2009/10. Since Émilie Serain was injured, Steffen was re-selected by Swiss Olympic for the 2010 Olympic Games . In 2011 she only took part in one World Cup race (8th place in Hasliberg ).
