The Franciscan monastery in Berlin-Pankow is a branch of the Franciscans of the German Franciscan Province . It is located in the back building at Wollankstrasse 19 in the Berlin district of Pankow in what is now the Pankow district .

history

After searching in vain in the city center and various parts of Berlin, the pastor of St. Georg offered the Franciscans of the Silesian Franciscan Province (Silesia) a small chapel in Parkstrasse 37 for the foundation of the monastery. However, Bishop Adolf Bertram von Breslau refused to give his consent because the chapel was too close to the parish church .

Finally, in June 1921 in Berlin-Pankow, the garden plot at Wollankstrasse 19 with two residential buildings built around 1890 was acquired, and about four weeks later the neighboring plot at Wollankstrasse 18 with a residential building. After negotiations with the housing office and the voluntary departure of tenants, some rooms could be set up for the establishment of a monastery. In autumn 1921 the first two Franciscans of Silesia moved in . The chapel was consecrated on October 4, 1925, it bears the patronage of St. Francis of Assisi . The monastery was before the Second World War the only house of Silesia west of the Oder and Neisse.

The monastery is known for having had a soup kitchen since 1991 . Since 1992 it belonged with the other monasteries of Silesia in the former GDR to the Saxon Franciscan Province ( Saxonia ), which became part of the German Franciscan Province in 2010.
