The women's education and conference center Zülpich e. V. is an adult and advanced training facility opened on July 1, 1979 in Zülpich - Lövenich , which is exclusively dedicated to female education .

history

The women's education center in Zülpich was founded by around 20 students from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences who wanted to establish an education and communication center that was run exclusively by women and intended for women. Following the example of the Milanese women's bookstore , this place was intended to provide a home for educational and socio-political, health-political, scientific and cultural projects for women at the height of the women's movement and thus contribute to a feminist counterculture . It was the first facility of its kind in Germany . Similar attempts to run women's holiday and education centers in Graiganz in Upper Franconia or in Stemmen near Bremen had failed because of the lack of money and the skepticism of the population.

A former Eifel farm at Prälat-Franken-Straße 22 in Zülpich-Lövenich was located and expanded in several construction phases according to ecological criteria. The conference center was opened on July 1, 1979 and has since been used by around 50,000 visitors.

The project was initially carried out collectively by a “team”. Over time, specialized work areas developed. Hiring professional specialists also turned out to be necessary. The collective became a “management team”, whose members take turns taking on “housekeeping” once a month: accompanying courses, looking after guests and speakers and taking care of general administrative processes.

Joining the German Parity Welfare Association in 1983 in order to get paid educational positions and grants for seminars in accordance with the NRW Further Education Act was controversial in the feminist scene. Today, the women's education center is supported by three registered associations (the institution itself, the association for political women's education, and Donna Futura - women's education association of the association feminist women's education ).

Educational offer

In terms of content, the women's training center focuses primarily on the areas of occupation and management (key qualifications, specialist and management skills), health and therapeutic procedures (health-promoting and supportive methods, professional training in healing, nursing, therapeutic professions), creativity and the environment (knowledge and skills across the entire spectrum of art and nature education), lifestyle and spirituality (personal development, spiritual theory and practice).

The house has always been seen as a holiday home for female tour groups or individual travelers. Right from the start, efforts were made to adopt a socially acceptable fee policy: Participants must assess themselves by self-assessment and pay conference fees that correspond to their income and living situation. For poor women there is also the possibility of signing up as a helper in the house and yard for the duration of their vacation stay (five hours of work against board and lodging).

Situation in the present

Today the site offers two seminar buildings (barn and front building), a large inner courtyard, an ecologically managed garden, sauna and meditation room. The accommodations (eight single, seven double and three three-bed rooms) offer space for a little over thirty guests and are named after important artists such as Jeanne Mammen , Simone de Beauvoir , Niki de Saint Phalle , Audre Laurde or Pippi Longstocking .

Until 1996, co-founder Sylvia Kolk was part of the management team; until 2009 Ann Marie Krewer and with her twelve other employees, including two cooks for the vegetarian kitchen and a housekeeper. Around 150 events are held annually by the participating associations and the educational institute. At the same time, the house is open to self-organized seminars and closed meetings of women's associations , lesbian groups , networks and similar initiatives. The women's education center is a member of the LAAW NRW .

On June 21, 2014, the thirty-five year anniversary was celebrated with a big women and girls festival.
