The Berlin women's wind orchestra is the largest symphonic women's wind orchestra in the world. It was founded in Berlin in 2003 and is supported by the Frauenblasorchester Berlin eV , founded on January 20, 2004 .

The orchestra comprises 66 musicians with instruments: flute , piccolo , oboe , bassoon , clarinet , basset horn , bass clarinet , soprano saxophone , alto saxophone , tenor saxophone , baritone saxophone , trumpet , French horn , trombone , bass trombone , tenor horn , tuba , and bass guitar , drums , Mallet and percussion .

Astrid Graf is the musical director.

The Frauenblasorchester Berlin performs regularly in the open-air stage at the Citadel in Berlin-Spandau, in Berlin parishes and on the occasion of charity concerts (e.g. 2015 in the Red Town Hall in favor of Terre des Femmes ) and on International Women's Day (Town Hall Zehlendorf, 2007, 2009 , 2011). Performances in the Philharmonic Chamber Music Hall took place in March 2009 and June 2011. In 2006 September they played at the court festival of the ruling mayor of Berlin.

In 2009, a second ensemble #olz & Blech was founded - originally to look for new talent for the orchestra - which is also directed by Astrid Graf.

repertoire

In addition to film and musical music, the orchestra's repertoire also includes swing, jazz and arrangements of classical music and rock music tailored to the orchestra's instrumentation (e.g. Smoke on the Water ). The repertoire also includes compositions by contemporary composers for wind orchestras such as Lorenzo Pusceddu, Anne McGinty and Janes Swearingen. The composer Susanne Stelzenbach composed her aerial play in five parts for the women's wind orchestra. The world premiere was on May 9, 2015 in the large broadcasting hall of the RBB in Berlin.

documentary

The documentary No Zickenfox by Kerstin Polte and Dagmar Jäger was made between 2011 and 2014 and shows the work of the orchestra and some of its musicians.
