Frauke Finsterwalder

Frauke Finsterwalder (* 1975 in Hamburg ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Life

Frauke Finsterwalder was born in Hamburg in 1975. She spent some of her school days in the USA . She then studied literature and history in Berlin . As an assistant director she worked at the Berliner Volksbühne and at the Maxim-Gorki-Theater . She also worked as a freelance journalist for the Berlin tabloid BZ and the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

In 2003 Finsterwalder finally began studying documentary directing at the University of Television and Film in Munich. Her first short film work 0.003 km was shown in 2005 at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival . This was followed by the documentary films Weil der Mensch ist ein Mensch (2007, together with Stephan Hilpert ) and The Great Pyramid (2010), which was shown for the first time at the Max Ophüls Prize film festival.

In July 2013, her first feature film Finsterworld premiered at the Munich Film Festival . Sandra Hüller , Ronald Zehrfeld , Margit Carstensen , Carla Juri , Michael Maertens and Corinna Harfouch can be seen in the leading roles . Finsterworld was awarded the Zenith Award for the best debut film at the World Film Festival in Montréal in 2013 , as well as the TV Feature Film Award from the Cologne Film Festival, the Cologne Conference . The film won the Golden Eye for the best German-language feature film at the Zurich Film Festival 2013 competition , as well as the Swiss Film Critics' Prize. Finsterworld was also nominated five times for the German Film Prize 2014, including as best feature film, received the German Film Critics Prize for the best screenplay and the German Director Prize Metropolis 2014 for the best young directors.

Frauke Finsterwalder has been married to the Swiss writer Christian Kracht since 2007 . The couple live in Los Angeles.
