reception

Heike Bock from the University of Lucerne wrote about Volkland's dissertation that it was a concise and profound study that reflected on and interpreted the ongoing border negotiations of confessional self-understanding. The book follows a clear line of argumentation and is methodologically stringent. In addition, Bock found Volkland's concentrated language to be beneficial for the reader, as it contained hardly any redundancies. Nevertheless, Bock asks himself, as with all micro-studies , to what extent Volkland's results can be generalized.

Caroline Schnyder also commented on this book. She wrote that Volkland's microanalyses illustrate the different status of denominations in different contexts. In addition, Volkland offers a panorama of denominational frictions, intermingling and demarcation, which opens up entirely new “perspectives” on denominational research. And even if the pair of terms “denomination and self-image” remains unwieldy, Vokland shows how the meaning of denomination is decided based on specific life situations.
