The Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Technology (IBMT), also known under the abbreviation “Fraunhofer IBMT”, is an institution of the Fraunhofer Society . It is headquartered in Saarland ( Sulzbach / Saar , St. Ingbert ), and its activities are related to applied research and development in the fields of engineering , natural sciences , biotechnology and medicine. The institute has a branch in Münster / Wolbeck, a project center for stem cell process technology in Würzburg and a contact office in Berlin.
history
With its founding in 1992 or its forerunner (main medical technology department) in 1987 under Klaus Gersonde as founding director, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft pursued the goal of scientific and engineering research, modern technology and technology transfer in the field of clinical research in Saarland in To promote cooperation with the Saarland university hospitals in Homburg / Saar.
From a former part of the institute in Lübeck , an independent institution emerged, the Fraunhofer Institute for Marine Biotechnology, EMB.
Research and Development
The institute works in the fields of biomedical and medical technology , sensor and measurement technology, ultrasound technology, medical telematics , biotechnology and biohybrid technology , stem cell research, cryo (bio) technology and nano (bio) technology, laboratory development, environmental technology, materials testing technology, House, air conditioning and security technology as well as industrial process automation.
The institute has been working in the field of stem cell research since 2003 and was the first institute of the Fraunhofer Society to receive approvals from the Robert Koch Institute to import human embryonic stem cells.
Cooperations
The institute is a member of the Fraunhofer Group for Life Sciences (VLS). The biological, biomedical, pharmacological and toxicological competencies of six Fraunhofer institutes are bundled in this group.
In the university sector, there are collaborations with the Saarland University and the Saarland University of Technology and Economics .
The institute is a founding member of the Association of German Kryobanks eV (GDK), an association of scientific and commercial cryobanks in Germany. BioKryo GmbH is a spin-off from this institute.
Infrastructure
In 2019, around 160 people were mainly active in the scientific and technical field.
The total budget for 2019 was EUR 17.5 million.
Since January 2015, the institute has been managed by Heiko Zimmermann. He holds the chair for molecular and cellular biotechnology / nanotechnology (specializing in life sciences) at Saarland University.
