Fred Fehl (born January 21, 1906 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † October 4, 1995 in New York City ) was an American theater photographer .

Life

Fred Fehl was a cousin of the inventor of printed circuit boards Paul Eisler (1907–1992) and the art historian Philipp Fehl (1920–2000). After the annexation of Austria , he emigrated to the USA in 1939. There he made his way as a child photographer. His recordings of theater productions were well received, and Fehl established himself as one of the leading theater photographers who no longer shot scenes in the studio. Fehl took advantage of the technical development of photography, especially film sensitivity, to record what was happening on the stage and also did without additional lighting.

Between 1940 and 1985, Fehl photographed more than 1000 theater productions and worked with more than 50 ballet companies and choreographers. He had a permanent contract with the New York City Ballet . In 1976 he exhibited 450 of 100,000 recordings in the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center .

He lived in Manhattan with Margaret Fehl .
