Fred Ottow

Gustav Ferdinand "Fred" Ottow (born November 3 . Jul / 15. November  1886 greg. In Tartu ; † 18th September 1969 in Munich ) was a journalist, writer and translator Baltic German origin.

Live and act

After attending school, Ottow studied first philology from 1906–1912, then law at the University of Dorpat , where he belonged to the Corporation Livonia . He then worked as a lawyer in Simferopol and from 1914–1918 as a notary at the Livonian Evangelical Lutheran Consistory in Riga . In 1918 he went to Germany as a journalist and was first editor-in-chief of the Greifswalder Zeitung and 1927–1934 of the Munich-Augsburger Abendzeitung , and from 1937 to 1942 the features editor of the Münchner Zeitung . Later he worked as a writer and above all as a translator, both of Estonian literature and especially of works of Russian classics ( Tolstoy , Dostoyevsky , Gogol , Leskov , Alexander Pushkin ).
