Freda Niemann

Freda Niemann (born January 17, 1908 in Berlin ; † July 18, 1996 in Hanover ) was one of the first female theologians in Germany to work in church service .

Life

Freda Niemann was a daughter of the future colonel and writer Alfred Niemann (1873-1946) and his wife Elisabeth von Velsen (1878-1964).

After studying theology, Freda Niemann worked as a hospital chaplain in Volmarstein / Ruhr from 1934 to 1947 .

Since she could not find a job in Westphalia, Niemann went to Hanover in 1947. There she taught until 1952, initially as a lecturer at the seminar for church services . Then she was responsible for women's work in the City Church Association of Hanover until 1958 . In addition, she looked after the maternity and infant home on Berckhusenstrasse as well as the department for female prisoners in the Hanover penal institution .

From 1958 until her entry into their retirement to Freda Niemann dedicated pastorally for people in the investigation and prison and was chairman of the Evangelical Conference Gefährdetenhilfe . Even after her retirement, Freda Niemann held various honorary positions such as chairing the Protestant station mission.

Honors

The pastor was posthumously honored by the state capital Hanover: The western part of Blumhardtstrasse in the Kleefeld district was renamed Freda-Niemann-Strasse in 2001 .
