Freddie George Hicks (1899 or 1900 - June 19, 1931 in Union Mills , Isle of Man ) was a British motorcycle racer .
Career
Freddie Hicks appeared on the stage of prestigious motorcycle races in the late 1920s. In 1928 he took part in the Isle of Man TT for the first time and was fifth on a Velocette in the junior race (up to 350 cm³).
The 1929 season was the most successful in Hicks' career. He achieved the only TT victory of his career in the junior category. He relegated Wal Handley ( AJS ) and Alec Bennett (Velocette) to their places on his Velocette , setting 69.72 mph (112.2 km / h ) and 70.95 mph (114.18 km / h) both a new race from also a new lap record. A little later he also won the 350cc races for the UMF Grand Prix at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans ( France ) and the Dutch TT at the Circuit van Drenthe in Assen, the Netherlands . At the 1929 European motorcycle championship held on October 19 and 20, 1929 in L'Ametlla del Vallès , about 30 kilometers north of Barcelona ( Spain ), he won the 350 cc team race on a Velocette and was thus promoted to Syd Crabtree the second European history champion in this class. Hicks was the only starter to cross the finish line in this race.
In 1930 Freddie Hicks accepted an offer from the Stevens brothers and moved to AJS in Wolverhampton , where he further developed the OHC machines and also drove them in races. After he was forced to slow down due to an injury in 1930, Hicks started the 1931 season with a victory in the 500 cc race for the Grand Prix of Nations in Monza, Italy .
On June 19, 1931, Freddie Hicks had an accident at the Isle of Man TT. He fell with his AJS in the senior race in the Union Mills section of the Snaefell Mountain Course and sustained injuries to which he succumbed at the scene of the accident. Hicks had been lying time of the accident in fourth place and on the pursuit of the Nortons of Percy Hunt , Jimmie Guthrie and Stanley Woods found.
