Freddy Thiriet (born March 18, 1921 , † December 26, 1986 ) was a French Byzantinist who dealt with the late medieval South and Southeast Europe and the eastern Mediterranean on the basis of Venetian sources and published numerous regests .

Thiriet was a professor at the University of Strasbourg . In 1959 he did his doctorate on the Venetian Romania , i.e. the part of the former Byzantine area that came under Venetian rule from 1204 , in particular as a result of the Fourth Crusade .

Thiriet's work was largely based on sources that were in the Venice State Archives . First he published the decisions of the Venetian Senate (Rogadia), which affected the former territory of Byzantium - the first volume already comprised 941 pages. There was also work on the Venetian-Byzantine trade, for example in an anthology in honor of Amintore Fanfani . However, the focus remained on access to the Venetian sources. In 1966 the first volume of his Délibérations des assemblées vénitiennes concernant la Romanie was published , in which he published the decisions of all Venetian council bodies from 1160 to 1363, which affected the Romania, as regesta. The second volume was published in 1971, covering the period from 1364 to 1463.

On the basis of these editions and other source studies, he brought out the standard work Études sur la Romanie Gréco Venitienne (Ve aux XVe siècle) in 1977 . This was followed a year later by an edition of the sources of the Duca di Candia , the representative of Venice on the island of Crete , whose administration was structured analogously to that of the mother city.

An anthology on the relationship between Byzantium and Italy was published in 1987 to commemorate him and had occupied him for a lifetime.
