Frans van Houten (born François Adrianus van Houten on April 26, 1960 in Eindhoven ) has succeeded Gerard Kleisterlee as CEO of the Dutch company Royal Philips Electronics (commonly known as Philips ) since April 1, 2011 .

Life

Training and work experience

Frans van Houten, son of a board member of Philips, studied economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and started his career at Philips in 1986 in marketing and sales at Philips Data Systems. He held several positions with the company and in 2002 became co-head of the consumer electronics division.

In November 2004, he became CEO of Philips Semiconductors, where he managed the spin-off of the division, which led to the establishment of NXP Semiconductors on October 1, 2006. Van Houten resigned as Chief Executive Officer, NXP, on December 31, 2008.

Philips CEO

On July 8, 2010, he was appointed CEO of Philips to succeed Gerard Kleisterlee in order to focus more on healthcare.

His main focus is the transformation and revitalization of the Philips portfolio into a focused health technology company. Funding for this is divestments, acquisitions and organic business development, such as the sale of the television business in 2012, the audio and video business in 2014 and the IPO of Philips Lighting on the Amsterdam Euronext stock exchange in May 2016. At the same time, Philips invested in acquisitions to strengthen the company's portfolio, including the leading medical device manufacturers, Volcano and Spectranetics, RespirTech, the leading suppliers of ventilators, Wellcentive and VitalHealth, as well as others in the fields of digital pathology, neurology, pregnancy and parenting, health informatics and ultrasound. He has also invested in research and development to build new businesses in areas such as digital pathology, medical wearables, and health informatics.

More functions

Frans was co-chair of the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2017. He was one of the initiators of the Compact for Responsive and Responsible Leadership, the aim of which is to create a corporate governance framework based on the long-term sustainability of companies and the long-term goals of Society is oriented. Frans is also a member of the European Round Table of Industrialists, an interest group representing the 50 largest European multinational companies. He is co-founder of NL2025, a platform for Dutch opinion leaders who support initiatives to create a better future for the Netherlands in the areas of education, sustainable growth and a vibrant society.

In February 2017, he was appointed to the Novartis Board of Directors.

Positions

Van Houten is an advocate of sustainability and the implementation of a circular economy and received the Fortune Award for Circular Economy Leadership at an event around the World Economic Forum Meeting 2018 in Davos.

Awards

In 2018, Philips was ranked 19th in Forbes' world's most prestigious companies, among the top 25 companies recognized for Best Design by Fortune magazine, and Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property & Science Business) Voted one of the Top 100 Global Innovators for the fifth time in a row.

In addition, Van Houten was named one of the Top 20 Global Business Leaders by Fortune magazine in 2017. His quote read: "We orientate ourselves towards CEOs with visions who influence the world beyond their company. The 20 star executives do nothing less than determine the future of the business."
