Frederick DeLand Leete

Frederick DeLand Leete (born October 1, 1866 in Avon , New York , † February 1958 in Saint Petersburg , Pinellas County , Florida ) was a Methodist theologian and bishop .

Live and act

His parents were Menzo Smith and Hannah Amelia (DeLand) Leete. He studied at Syracuse University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1889 and his master's degree in 1891 . From 1888 he was a member of the New York Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and served in New York state congregations until he was called to pastor the Central Methodist Church in Detroit , Michigan in 1906 . The 1912 general conference elected Leete bishop. Until his retirement he served two four-year terms in three different locations: from 1912 to 1920 in Atlanta , then until 1928 in Indianapolis and finally until 1936 in Omaha . Because of his experiences in both northern and southern states of the United States, Bishop Leete promoted the unification of the Methodist churches. He was also a participant in the Ecumenical Methodist Conferences of 1911, 1921 and 1931, and President of the Ecumenical Council of the Americas and Orient from 1931 to 1944 .

Frederick D. Leete was a member of the American Historical Association . As a church historian , he collected a significant amount of manuscripts and published a fundamental work on the bishops of the Methodist Church and other books on aspects of Methodist church history. He donated his Methodist Historical Library to the Bridwell Library in 1956 . In 1936, Southern Methodist University awarded Bishop Leete an honorary doctorate in law .

Frederick Leete was married to Jeanette Fuller since July 28, 1891. The couple had three children.
