Frederick Leathers, 1st Viscount Leathers
Frederick James Leathers, 1st Viscount Leathers , CH , PC (born November 21, 1883 in Stepney , London - † March 19, 1965 ) was a British economic manager and politician of the Conservative Party , who served as Minister for War Transport from 1941 to 1945 ( Minister of War Transport ). In 1941 he was raised to the hereditary nobility as Baron Leathers and was a member of the House of Lords until his death . He later served as Secretary of State for Co-ordination of Transport, Fuel and Power between 1951 and 1953 . In 1954 he was finally raised to Viscount Leathers .
Life
Leathers, who came from a humble background, left school in 1898 at the age of fifteen and then worked for the Steamship Owners Coal Association , whose managing director he became in 1916. In the following years he also worked for various other companies in the coal and shipping industries such as William Cory & Son and finally a board member of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company , where he came into contact with Winston Churchill . At the beginning of the Second World War in 1940 he became advisor to the Shipping Ministry for coal matters. On May 1, 1941, he took over in the war government of Prime Minister Winston Churchill office as Minister of War Transportation ( Minister of War Transport ) and has held this minister in the transitional government Churchill between 23 May and 26 July 1945. At the same time was he on May 9, 1941, member of the secret Privy Council ( Privy Council ).
On May 19, 1941 he was raised as Baron Leathers , of Purfleet in the County Essex, to the hereditary nobility of the Peerage of the United Kingdom and was thus a member of the House of Lords until his death. He was also the British representative on the British-US Joint Committee on Shipping Adjustment (Combined Shipping Adjustment Board) between 1942 and 1945 and was awarded the Order of the Companions of Honor (CH) on January 1, 1943 .
In Churchill's third cabinet , Leathers assumed the post of Secretary of State for Co-ordination of Transport, Fuel and Power on October 30, 1951, and held this post until the ministry was dissolved on September 3 , 1951 . September 1953. On January 18, 1954 he was finally raised to Viscount Leathers , of Purfleet in County Essex, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Moreover, given to him University of Birmingham and the University of Leeds an honorary Doctor of Laws respectively (Honorary Doctor of Law) .
His marriage to Emily Ethel Baxter on June 1, 1907, with whom he was married until his death on March 19, 1965, resulted in two sons and a daughter. His eldest son, Frederick Alan Leathers, was a director at William Cory & Son like him and inherited the latter's title of 2nd Viscount when he died. The second son, Leslie John Leathers, worked as a solicitor and from 1961 until his death in 2002 as General Commissioner of Taxes . His only daughter was Audrey Mary Leathers.
