Carl Størmer
Frederik Carl Mülertz Størmer (born September 3, 1874 in Skien , † August 13, 1957 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian geophysicist and mathematician .
Størmer was from 1903 to 1946 professor of pure mathematics at Christiana University (now Oslo University). He was also the first president of the Norwegian Mathematical Society, founded in 1918 .
Størmer developed a mathematical theory of the Northern Lights phenomena. The Verlet-Störmer method for the numerical integration of Newton's equations of motion of interacting particles is named after him and Loup Verlet .
In 1936 he gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Oslo (Program for the Quantitative Discussion of Electron Orbits in the Field of a Magnetic Dipole, with Application to Cosmic Rays and Kindred Phenomena) and in 1924 at the in Toronto (Modern Norwegian Researches on the Aurora Borealis).
He had been a corresponding member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences since 1918 and an honorary member since 1934 . In 1947 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
The mountain Størmerfjellet on the Spitsbergen -Archipel and Størmer number was named after him.
