Frederik Willem Krieger also: Krüger (born November 23, 1805 in Rotterdam , † August 24, 1881 in Leiden ) was a Dutch physician.

Life

The son of the doctor Jacob Krieger and his wife Christina Maria van den Snoek had attended the Erasmus school in his hometown from 1819 and left it with the speech de expeditionibus cruciatis . On September 10, 1822, he enrolled at the University of Groningen to study medicine. Because he was more concerned with German and French literature than with medicine, his father brought him to his uncle's Rotterdam bookstore at Krieger and Co. in 1825. He worked here for three years. He then moved to the University of Berlin , where he matriculated on April 4, 1829 to study medicine again. He stayed here for two and a half years, mainly devoting himself to anatomical and physiological studies with Karl von Graefe , Johann Nepomuk Rust , Johann Christian Jüngken (1793–1875) and Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach . After a short stay with his family in Rotterdam, he returned to Groningen in October 1831. Here, Krieger received his doctorate on December 18, 1834 with the dissertation Diss. De graviditate tubariaeiusque casu Groningae observato as a doctor of medicine, on May 27, 1835 as a doctor of obstetrics and on June 2 of the same year as a doctor of surgery. During his studies in Groningen he was an assistant at the local cholera hospital.

After completing his studies, he returned to his hometown, where he established himself as a doctor. On July 6, 1836, he became lecturer at the clinical school in Rotterdam and in 1842 he was appointed city doctor. On April 22, 1848, by royal decree, Krieger was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Leiden , teaching surgery and ophthalmology . He took over this office on September 23, 1848 with the inaugural speech De progressibus quos nostra praesertim aetate per anatomiam pathologicam fecit chirurgia and opened his lectures on September 25 with the topic Over de wijze waarop de heelkunde moet sein aangeleerd en uitgeoefend . From 1851 he taught anthropology and forensic medicine and also took part in the organizational tasks of the university. In this capacity he also became rector of the Alma Mater in 1854/55 , which task he resigned with the speech Fatorum academiae Lugduno-Batavae anno 1854-55 enarratio .

Due to health restrictions, he was ill with melancholy, he asked for his discharge from the professorship, which took place on June 3, 1869 by royal resolution with his retirement. After his retirement he still worked on a Geschiedenis der Steensnijding (history of stone cutting), which is in the Leiden university library as a manuscript. Krieger was a member of several learned societies. So in 1835 at the Society for the Promotion of Scientific and Free Literature in Rotterdam, 1839 corresponding member of the 'Vis unita fortior' society in Hoorn, 1841 corresponding member of the Cercle médico-chirurgical in Brussels, 1848 extraordinary member of the Societas medica in Rotterdam, 1848 honorary member of the Society for the Promotion of Cowpox Vaccination in Rotterdam, 1850 member of the Society for the Promotion of Medicine and Surgery in Amsterdam, 1851 member of the Provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences and 1861 member of the Society of Dutch Literature in Leiden.

Krieger met Maria van Gilse van der Pals on May 3, 1843 in Rotterdam (* February 21, 1822 in Rotterdam; † April 1, 1891 in Arnhem), the daughter of Cornelis van Gilse van der Pals and Johanna van Staveren, married. There are two daughters from the marriage, one of whom is with the doctor in Arnhem, Dr. Joannes Conradus Ludovicus Safe (* around 1840 in Leiden) married.
