Frederik van der Meer

Frederik van der Meer (born November 16, 1904 in Bolsward , † July 19, 1994 in Nijmegen ) was a Dutch priest , Catholic theologian, art historian and church historian .

Life

Van der Meer attended high schools in Sneek and Culemborg . From 1924 he studied at the seminary of the province of Utrecht and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1928. From 1932 he studied at the Pontifical Institute for Christian Archeology ( Pontificio Istituto di Archeologia Cristiana ) in Rome and received his doctorate there in 1934 with the thesis Maiestas Domini. Theophanies de l'Apocalypse dans l'art chrétien. Étude sur les origines d'une iconographie spéciale du Christ (Vatican 1938, Antwerp 1978, also in Dutch, German and English). From 1939 he was a lecturer at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (now Radboud University Nijmegen ), from 1946 Associate Professor of Christian Archeology and Liturgy and from 1955 to 1974 Full Professor of Art History, Christian Archeology and Iconography . He spent his twilight years in the Huize St. Jozef Monastery of the Franciscan Sisters of Waldbreitbach in Lent (Nijmegen).

Van der Meer was a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (1950), received the PC Hooft Prize in 1964 and was also the recipient of other prizes several times.
