Fredrik Norén

Fredrik Norén (* 1941 ; † May 2016 ) was a Swedish drummer and band leader of modern jazz .

Live and act

Norén became known in the 1960s through his appearances at the Gyllene Cirkeln jazz club (also: The Golden Circle ), where he a. a. played with guest American musicians such as Ben Webster or Dexter Gordon . In the 1970s he was a member of Lars Gullin's band . In 1978 he founded his own formation, Fredrik Norén Band (FNB), in which u. a. Joakim Milder , Christian Spering , later Esbjörn Svensson and in the 1990s Magnus Broo and Fredrik Ljungkvist played. During this time he performed with his band at the Stockholm Jazz Club Fasching . In 1980 the FNB was named the best new jazz group in Sweden.

With Bobo Stenson and Palle Danielsson, Norén worked in 1993 on Joakim Milder's album Sister Majs blouse ; In 1998 Norén's album Epilogue was released with compositions by Börje Fredriksson . In a quartet with Bernt Rosengren , Lars Sjösten and Palle Danielsson, Late Date was created with music by Lars Gullin . In 2004 he recorded the album Coneccão Suecia Bahia with Brazilian musicians from Bahia . In 2006 he received the Lars Gullin Prize and the Lars Färnlöf Prize . He also played with the quintet of Staffan Abbeleen.

According to writers Richard Cook and Brian Morton , Norén's band can be seen as Sweden's hardbop answer to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers .
Fredrik Norén should not be confused with the Swedish jazz trumpeter of the same name, who leads the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra .
