The Freesendorfer See in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is located in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district south of the Greifswalder Bodden , from which it is only separated by a narrow land bridge. It is around 740 meters long and around 920 meters wide.
The Freesendorfer See is about six kilometers northeast of the Lubmin seaside resort at the exit of the Peene River . Greifswald is 22 kilometers southwest and Wolgast 13 kilometers south. The body of water, together with its drains, bounds the (half) island of Struck in the west. To the west of the lake are the Freesendorfer salt marshes .
The lake has an area of around 0.48 km² and has been part of the oldest nature reserve in Western Pomerania, " Peenemünder Haken, Struck and Ruden ", together with the Peenemünder Haken and the island of Ruden .
The lake is connected to the Greifswalder Bodden and the Spandowerhagener Wiek by two ditches and this connection to the sea gives it a transitional status from brackish to freshwater lake. It is a real beach lake and serves as a resting place for water birds. Its banks are lined with belts of reeds with beach asters and are characterized by the surrounding salt marshes with their creeks , ponds and sandbanks.
In the lake there are occurrences of brackish water crowfoot ( Ranunculus baudotil ), a subspecies of the shield water crowfoot .
