The free-game European championship in 1990 was the 21st tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from April 28 to May 4, 1990 in Bottrop . It was the third free game European championship in Germany.
history
The European Championship in Bottrop was held in a new system. The sentence system up to 100 points is not very popular with players, as chance often plays a major role. A great many games were ejected in one recording. The tie-break and finally the gang tie don't say much about the strength of the player. Despite everything, the best carom player in Europe at the time, Fonsy Grethen, defended his title. In the final he defeated Fabian Blondeel from Bochum with 2-1 sets. The Dutch Henri Tilleman and Ad Klijn qualified for the small final via the consolation round. Here Tilleman also won with 2: 1 sets.
mode
A preliminary round was played in 14 groups of three and two players. This was followed by two knockout phases. Nine players were determined to meet the seven seeded players. Then there was a double knockout system with a winning and a consolation round, whereby the players for the final and the game for third place were determined. The game was played on two sets of 100 points each. If a sentence ended 100: 100 in a recording there was a tie break. If this tie ended, a gang decision was played to determine the winner. It was played without a break, except for one game in a recording.
