Free student orchestra Rostock

The Free Student Orchestra Rostock ( FSOR ; own spelling Free Student Orchestra Rostock ) is a symphony orchestra that was founded in 2006 by students of the University of Rostock and with its symphony concerts has since become an integral part of the cultural life of the city of Rostock and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

The Free Student Orchestra is thanks to an initiative by students at the University of Rostock who in 2005 came up with the plan to found a free student orchestra that was organizationally independent from the university . In 2006 the Free Student Orchestra Rostock eV - FSOR was founded. Since the first concert in 2007, the orchestra has developed in a short time with around 80 members (2019) into the largest amateur orchestra in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in which students and graduates of the university work together make music.

A concert program is rehearsed every semester under the direction of young conductors and then performed in several concerts in Rostock and in some cases in other cities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The orchestra is sponsored by the University of Rostock, the student union Rostock and the student representatives of the university. There are also collaborations with members of the North German Philharmonic Rostock and students of the Rostock University of Music and Drama .

Chamber music

Various chamber music groups have formed within the orchestra. a. a wind quintet, a clarinet quintet and a string quartet. Since 2017 there has also been a string ensemble that has tackled larger concert projects of its own. In 2019 this string orchestra joined z. B. in the Protestant town church in Bad Arolsen together with the local school orchestra as well as in the Rostock University Church with the Ensamble musical de Alvarado from the Mexican state of Veracruz .

repertoire

Classics of symphonic literature such as Brahms ' 2nd , Schumann's 3rd , Bruckner's 4th , Tchaikovsky's 5th and 6th and Dvořák's 8th and 9th symphonies , but also Wagner's Meistersinger Overture, Sibelius ' Finlandia or Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 became already performed.

The orchestra is also dedicated to the work of lesser-known composers: the program included the Trumpet Concerto by Alexander Arutjunjan , The Sea by Frank Bridge , the Flute Concerto in D major by Carl Reinecke and the 1st Violin Concerto by Philip Glass , together with youngsters Soloists.

The project "KARAT meets Classic", in which the orchestra performed together with the Rostock Youth Symphony Orchestra and the band Karat as part of the Hanse Sail 2016 and, together with other orchestras, as part of the 2018 city anniversary, attracted national attention .
