The Arad Statue of Liberty, also known as the Monument of the Martyrs of Arad , is a statue in the Park of Reconciliation ( Parcul Reconcilierii in Romanian ), in the 1st district of Centru of Arad . It was built in honor of the 13 generals, leaders of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/1849 , who went down in history as the martyrs of Arad . The monument is a symbol of the city.

The idea of ​​erecting a monument in honor of the executed generals arose in the first days after the suppressed revolution. In 1873 an invitation to tender took place, for which the sculptor Adolf Huszár was awarded the contract. György Zala continued to work after his death .

On October 6, 1890, the solemn unveiling of the Statue of Liberty took place in memory of the martyrs of Arad . In 1925 the statue was removed from its location by decree 1512/1925 of the government of Ion IC Brătianu on the pretext of being anti-Romanian and temporarily stored in the Arad fortress . The Radu Vasile government issued a decree on September 20, 1999, entrusting the Statue of Liberty to the Franciscan Order for administration . On March 4, 2004, the Adrian Năstase government approved the erection of the statue in the Romanian-Hungarian Park of Reconciliation , which was created especially for this purpose in Piața Pompierilor (Fire Brigade Square). The ceremonial unveiling took place on April 25, 2004 in the presence of Romanian and Hungarian representatives as well as representatives of the European Commission .

On the base of the statue are the reliefs of the 13 Hungarian generals who were executed on October 6, 1849. The central figure of the monument is a woman with a laurel wreath as a symbol of freedom. It is surrounded by the four allegories of the War of Independence: the awakening of freedom , the fighting spirit , the willingness to make sacrifices and the dying fighter .
