Foreign (Foreign Cycle, Part 1) is the seventh studio album by the Frankfurt band ASP . It represents the first part of the Fremder cycle (after the Black Butterfly and Krabat the third song cycle of the band ASP). The theme of the album and the cycle, as the title suggests, is above all to feel strange in oneself and in the world. Strange cycle is the continuation of the black butterfly .

The album was released on October 21, 2011 with a two-month delay.

Music style and content

The musical style of the album is shaped by the band's typical interplay of rock, electronic and folk elements. After the rather folky album Zaubererbruder auf Fremd, stronger electronic elements were used again for the first time, so the song Eisige Reality has a completely electronic intro. Clear electronic elements can also be found in the song A Prayer for sanctuary . However, the rock share has also increased, songs like A Prayer for Sanctuary , FremdkörPerson, firstly and Angstkathedrale contain formative, sometimes very hard guitar elements. This reinforcement of the guitar elements is due to the changed line-up of the band, as for the first time in the band's history 2 guitarists are part of the band. In addition to the electro and rock elements, folk elements can also be heard again, the song FremdkörPerson, firstly contains an intro with strong folk elements and Unverwandt is characterized by a violin theme .

Artwork

The cover, which was designed by Timo Würz , shows the black butterfly typical of ASP . The butterfly wings are designed like the ceiling structure of a Gothic church. As with the changeling single, the wing structure of a butterfly is slightly lifted from the white background .

The artwork in the booklet was designed by Matthias Bäuerle. A special feature are the text elements printed with clear varnish, which are visible with the right incidence of light.

Individual tracks

Changeling

Wechselbalg is the first single after a two-year break. In Wechselbalg , ASP takes up the motif from So much deeper (published as a bonus song on the best of album Horror Vacui ): “ The innermost expressed and internalized to the utmost. A changeling, the world changed, we'll see ”. The introductory words of the old piece become the refrain of the new piece and serve as a link between the cycles. The single was released on August 12, 2011 and made it to number 46 in the German album charts .

Icy reality

The second single was finally an icy reality . This was published on March 9, 2012 after a poll among ASP fans was held in December. There was still a foreign body to choose from , firstly and back to back . As with Wechselbalg , there is also a limited edition with an edition of 5,999 copies.

The Mysterious Vanishing of the Foremar Family

The song The Mysterious Vanishing of the Foremar Family (in German: The mysterious disappearance of the Foremar family) describes, as the sub-title of the song already describes (A real Gothic Tale), a story that actually happened. ASP speculates in the song about how the family disappeared.

Fear cathedral

Fear Cathedral is about 17 minutes long and is the second longest song in the band's history (after the 27-minute Requiem from the album Requiembryo ). The text, which was originally a calligram , describes a large, dark cathedral that is only illuminated by the light of a single candle. This symbolizes the fear.

The song builds up an uncanny heaviness in the first half, the text is sung very long and is carried by heavy guitars. The second half of the song begins with a very warm-looking piano theme and warm-looking guitars, until this turns into new sound motifs. The song received praise from most of the reviews.

Limited edition

Published is foreign in the same number of variants, namely in a Digibook version, a limited edition of 7000 pieces of 2-CD version and a limited edition of 499 pieces Picture- vinyl version.

On the bonus CD Limited Edition ASP has the well-known song Wouldn't It Be Good by Nik Kershaw from 1984. There are also remixes on the CD.

Reviews

"In short, I can't see the slightest mistake on this album and I'm probably forced to give full marks for the very first time!"

- Laughing Moon : Metalglory.de

“Even if ASP have set off for new shores with the new cycle, the new album will not seem strange to the fans of these artists. Spreng's eye-catching and yet familiar voice still defines the being of his albums and runs like a red thread through the work. And the chosen theme of "being different" has been fundamentally musically processed here, as in all of the "Meister" albums. "

- Uwe Felten : RP-Online

"ASP proved at the concert that he climbed a new stage with" stranger "but is still the same!"

- Steffen : MyBluepad
