The Bowl Holding SE (also: Fressnapf group ) is a franchise -Unternehmen based in Krefeld . With over 1,650 stores in eleven European countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Hungary, Poland, Luxembourg, Ireland, Denmark, Belgium) and more than 12,000 employees, it is the largest specialist retail chain for pet food and accessories in Europe. Worldwide, the Fressnapf Group ranks third after PetSmart and Petco. In Germany, around 700 of the more than 900 stores are operated by around 200 franchise partners. The other, also international locations (there mostly under the name Maxi Zoo) are directing operations. The total turnover of the Fressnapf Group in 2018 was around € 2,100 million.

history

In 1990 the then 24-year-old Torsten Toeller opened his first specialist store for pet food and accessories in Erkelenz . Inspired by American super pet stores, he developed a concept for European pet supplies specialist markets. From 1992 markets in the franchise system were created , in 1997 for the first time abroad (Austria). Poland was added in 2012 as the last country in international expansion for the time being. In 2018, the 1,500 store across Europe was opened near Paris. The Fressnapf Group's online shop is currently online in Germany, Luxembourg, Denmark, Austria and Poland and is gradually being expanded. In Germany and Austria, there are also partnerships with the PAYBACK customer bonus program. The company vision is: "Happier Pets. Happier People" and is with the mission "We give everything to make the coexistence of humans and animals easier, better and happier." In addition, the Fressnapf Group is building its own brand in animal welfare under the "Animal Committed" initiative. The online-based platform bundles the social commitment of customers and companies and thus supports u. a. Animal shelters and animal therapy facilities. For example, the German Animal Welfare Association and the assistance dog association VITA eV receive regular support. In addition, there are currently "Adoptierstuben" in six German Fressnapf markets (Marburg, Munich, Mannheim, Tübingen, Cologne-Porz, Schwentinental), which, together with the Animal Welfare Association and local animal shelters, move animals to new homes.

Equiva GmbH has also been part of the Fressnapf Group since 2007. EQUIVA is a franchise company that sells equestrian accessories, equestrian clothing, stable and pasture supplies as well as animal feed in stationary retail and online.

Fressnapf is represented with around 1,650 stores (as of December 2019) in twelve European countries. There are 901 stores in Germany, followed by Austria and France. There are different market sizes: the largest is the “Megazoo” from 2,000 m², the next largest is the “Fressnapf XXL” with up to 1,500 square meters.

In non-German-speaking countries, the Fressnapf stores usually operate under the name “ Maxi Zoo ”. Exceptions here are Luxembourg (" Fressnapf ") and Hungary (" Fressnapf ") as well as German-speaking Switzerland.

Controversy

A competition organized by Fressnapf on Facebook for the European Football Championship 2012 in Poland and the Ukraine was criticized by customers because thousands of street dogs were killed in Ukraine to make the streets cleaner. The action was then withdrawn and a link was placed on the German Animal Welfare Association .

In August 2013, the German Council for Public Relations spoke about surreptitious advertising in the television program Wetten, dass ..? a reprimand against Dolce Media , Fleurop and Fressnapf.

In April 2017, a process began before the labor court in Krefeld after seven out of fifteen employees at the Group's headquarters in Krefeld were dismissed after a meeting outside of working hours about the possibility of establishing a works council and one employee had appealed .
