Peace of Koblenz
The Peace of Koblenz was the result of a royal meeting of Charles the Bald , Lothar II and Ludwig the German at Pentecost 860 in Koblenz . The reason for the meeting was the need to resolve conflicts between the three related rulers.
history
After the death of Louis the Pious , in the Treaty of Verdun in 843, his empire was divided into three parts for his sons: the west of France went to Charles the Bald, the middle empire and the imperial dignity to Lothar I, and the east of France to Louis the German.
Shortly before his death, Lothar I divided his middle kingdom in the division of Prüm into his three sons in 855 :
- Ludwig II. († 875) received the dignity of Emperor and Italy
- Charles of Provence († 863) received Provence and the larger part of Burgundy belonging to the Middle Kingdom (the smaller part, the region now called "Burgundy" ("Bourgogne") in the center of present-day France , had been part of western France since 843 )
- Lothar II. († 869) received the northern part of the empire named after him ( Lotharingia ).
Around 860 there were five successor empires in the former domain of Ludwig the Pious, some of which also came into conflict with one another.
In 854 and again in 858, the East Franconian ruler Ludwig invaded the West Franconian empire at the request of West Franconian nobles and threatened Charles's rule there. In 859 Ludwig had to withdraw from West Franconia in view of the resistance organized by Archbishop Hinkmar von Reims - a close advisor to Charles the Bald.
Disputes between Karl, Ludwig and Lothar II led to an assembly of clerical and secular princes, which took place from June 5th to 7th, 860 in the sacristy of the Kastor Church in front of the city walls of Koblenz. In this meeting the three rulers agreed on a peace treaty.
As early as 869, the conflicts between the successors of Ludwig the Pious broke out again after Lothar II had died and Karl tried to incorporate his former domain of Lotharingien into his West Franconian empire. In the Treaty of Meerssen , 870 Lotharingia were divided between the western and eastern empires.
