The Evangelical Peace Church Grünau is located on Don-Ugoletti-Platz , at the end of Eibseestrasse, in the Berlin district of Grünau in the Treptow-Köpenick district and was built from 1904 to 1906 according to plans by Ludwig von Tiedemann (architect) and Wilhelm Walther (BDA). The designs for the altar, pulpit, stalls, entrance portal and doors are from W. Walther.

History, architecture, furnishings

The church is one of the churches that were built under the influence of the church building association and under the patronage of Empress Auguste Viktoria - popularly known as "Kirchenjuste".

There was relatively little war damage in World War II . On April 23, 1945, when Soviet troops marched into Berlin-Grünau, the inventory was extensively looted and destroyed. From the day of repentance in 1948, regular services were held again after the roof and windows had been repaired .

The Friedenskirche, in the Brandenburg style, shows a clear reference to late Romanesque buildings. It is considered one of the last buildings by the architect von Tiedemann.

The church, oriented in north-south direction, is clad with Nesselberg sandstone and red bricks and has a multifaceted entrance building on the south side with a three-sided polygon for the main portal and organ gallery . It is flanked on the south-west corner by a 35-meter-high square tower, on the south-east corner by the baptistery and apse .

Two transverse gable roofs on the west side with facing gables give the building a characteristic appearance.

Date from the construction period

The complete painting of the interior of the church by F. W. Mayer was based on historical models from the Middle Ages . This was painted over with white latex paint in 1966 . The colored lead glass windows with Christian motifs designed by Mayer have not been around since 1944. In the course of the decades a gradual deterioration spread, so that after the fall of the Wall a renovation and reconstruction could be tackled.

During the reconstruction in 2006, the experts from the architectural office Thoma und Thoma, Berlin, exposed most of the diverse, ornamental and figurative painting of the interior. A sanitary wing and a community room were built into the wing of the aisle, and the side gallery was converted into an event room.

The tower clock was faithfully restored on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Grünau district in 1999.

The district council assembly Treptow-Köpenick renamed the small forecourt at the Friedenskirche in 2008 in Don-Ugoletti-Platz . Don Ugoletti was pastor in the Italian city of Albinea , later a twin town of Treptow-Köpenick. He recorded the events surrounding the Villa Rossi in his diary and ensured that five executed Wehrmacht soldiers, including the Johannistaler Hans Schmidt, were not simply buried, but rather buried in the Christian sense.
