Frieder Simon
Frieder Simon (born July 16, 1936 in Leipzig ; † June 20, 2020 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German puppeteer, puppet designer and director. He was considered one of the most important pioneers of artistic puppet theater.
Live and act
Frieder Simon was born with puppet shows: his father Gerhard Simon was also a puppeteer. From childhood he played with his father, later he took over the leadership with new self-designed dolls. Finally he switched the stage to stand alone.
After graduating from school, he first learned the carpentry trade. For ideological reasons, he was not admitted to the Abitur at the Leipzig Workers and Farmers Faculty . He obtained the university on the second education at the evening high school and studied at the School of Industrial Design Halle, Burg Giebichenstein 1958-1963 industrial design . After a short period of work as a designer, he made puppetry his main occupation: The " Original Art Figure & Caspertheater LariFari " was created. His strength lay in demanding puppetry for adults. Franz Graf von Pocci was his great role model.
All the equipment, especially the figures, were made with their own heads and hands in our own workshop. He worked alone behind the stage, largely without amplifier technology and generated his noises and music without electronics.
Frieder Simon was married to the textile designer Barbara Simon, who was involved in the production and design of his figures. They lived in Halle (Saale). The marriage had two children.
